Only 2GB per month bandwidth…

Thursday , 16, September 2010

Here in Lilongwe, Malawi we have a 2GB per month account for internet. Large sites such as YouTube and Facebook will drain this amount rapidly. Luckily between six o’clock and six in the morning the bandwidth is unlimited. During the day however we want to use a minimal amount of bandwidth. Therefore I started to search online what options I have to minimize bandwidth. The first option is to not show stuff like images and videos. The other option is to use mobile sites, sites like m.facebook.com and m.gmail.com. I found this site explaining how you can set FireFox to only show mobile sites. This is what they say:

  1. Download FireFox and the Modify Headers addon.
  2. Restart FireFox.
  3. In FireFox go to Tools -> Modify Headers.
  4. Select “Add” from the drop down box in the upper left.
  5. In the first text box type: User-Agent.
  6. In the second copy-paste: “Mozilla/5.0 (SymbianOS/9.2; U; Series60/3.1 NokiaE51-1/100.34.20; Profile/MIDP-2.0 Configuration/CLDC-1.1 ) AppleWebKit/413 (KHTML, like Gecko) Safari/413?.
  7. Click Save.
  8. Click on Configuration and click ‘Always On’.
  9. Close the Modify Headers window.
  10. Now, just browse around, go to Google and you will see it will show a mobile sized page.
