I really enjoyed the presentation Kim Stanley Robinson gave at Google. It’s really inspiring and I heard a lot of the things he also describes in his books. One of the things he mentioned is the Mondragón Cooperative Corporation. I find this concept of a coop organization so powerful. Here in the Netherlands for example a lot of inhabitants of the island Texel own a share of the TESO company which manages the boat service to the mainland. So no profit for profit, but profit which is used to better the service. I think this is also needed in science. Scientists managing themselves, not being managed by a board of directors or CEOs. That is also a way to describe Free Science as I mentioned before in my posts (1, 2, 3).
