Geopower!

Monday , 29, January 2007

I just read a small article from Science Magazine about harnessing geothermal energy. Water could be pumped into granite, up to 1.5 km deep, where the liquid water becomes steam, which subsequently powers turbines. When you think about it, there are really a lot of alternatives to oil and gas around. Of course wind and solar energy, but also the tidal effect could be used. I guess an enormous solar power plant could be installed somewhere in the Sahara. Perhaps the shade underneath the solar panels could be utilized to grow plants, although the water needed for the plants needs to be imported of course. It could perhaps be extracted from a subsurface aquifer. A tidal power plants could be installed at those locations with big differences between low and high tide. Perhaps also places like the Dover Strait, Gibraltar, etcetera could be utilized, because so much water is flowing through these narrows each day.
