Transnational and metanational

In the Mars Trilogy by Kim Stanley Robinson (which I’m reading for I guess the 6th or 7th time…) a possible future of capitalism is described. In KSRs universe big companies merge to become so called ‘transnationals’. These enormous companies are so big they are not bounded by specific countries anymore and become the new world powers. I found the word transnational using Google: there exists a Transnational Foundation for Peace and Future Research. Here the world transnational is used in a completely different way. This TFF is “an independent think tank, a global network and a website for peace by peaceful means”.

The next step in companies becoming world powers, described by KSR, is the emergence of ‘metanationals’. These are companies which are so big they can buy other countries. They give the government, police, army a raise and everybody is happy. The country subsequently starts working for the metanational. After some Googling I found the term metanational in the following book title: From Global to Metanational: How Companies Win in the Knowledge Economy. I’m really interested what this book has to say. In their association a metanational is “a company that builds a new kind of competitive advantage by discovering, accessing, mobilizing, and leveraging knowledge from many locations around the world”.

    Is de huidige wereld al niet opgedeeld in grote multinationals? Ik geloof niet in politiek, de economie heeft de werkelijke macht! De bedrijven! Komt Proletariers aller landen, verhef uwe stem en sta op!
    Ben bang dat dit verhaal is waar geworden of wordt. Zulke sc-fic is ook al vertoont in the film Children of Men (de bedoelde toekomst lijkt ook hier eigenlijk striking veel op ons heden…)

    Ook als er bedrijven aan de macht zijn word er politiek bedreven, waar jij niet ingeloofd lijkt me is dat landen nog aan de macht zijn. Machtige politieke figuren zijn ook vaak machtige directeuren (geweest)… KSR noemde het bovenstaande systeem corporate feudalism. Ik heb de film Children of Men ook gezien, was in mijn optiek een goede weergave van de groei van fascisme van binnenuit een samenleving die wij nu nog als democratisch beschouwen. Wellicht is hier de grootste oorzaak het kweken van angst. Als de samenleving gebaseerd is op angst zijn er krachtige maatregelen nodig (vind de samenleving) waaronder krachtige leiders.
